Shabby Chic DIY Christmas Ornaments

DIY Christmas Ornament

I have an au natural Christmas tree with just a little bit of sparkle. White lights, ornaments in cream, gold, silver, glass and natural rafia and hemp…I haven’t purchased a single ornament this year, but wanted to add to my collection, so I made several of my own ornaments in these two styles. Here’s a full tutorial on how you can make your own DIY Hemp Ball Ornament and DIY Shell Ball Ornament.

Here’ s a quick tour of my Christmas tree.  I’ll show you more about the wood word ornaments in a few days, so check back!

I love the natural and glam mixed together, more modern rustic with a simple palate.  Most of all I love my handmade ornaments that I add to my collection every year.

Shells (try bubble shells from Quality Shells)

Gold Ribbon

First for the shell ball. I took some gold ribbon about 5″ long, looped it around like a hanger, and used my hot glue to secure it to the Styrofoam ball. While I was waiting on that to dry I started going through my collection of shells and sorting out all the ones that were a similar size. My bag ranged from 1/2″ to 3/4″ shells, but I wanted the size to be pretty uniform – at least for one whole ornament, so I did a LOT of sorting first.

Next I just started gluing the shells to the Styrofoam ball, starting at the top by the ribbon and working my way around and around. I was careful to make sure each shell turned the same direction, so the ornament would look more uniform.

Then just keep on going until you have the entire thing covered. The glue dries pretty fast between the shell and ornament, so I was able to hold it without making the shells I just glued fall off. The whole ornament only took about 15 minutes once I had my shells sorted.

Hemp Cording

This ornament was really simple too, taking all of 5 minutes to throw together! The process is similar. First you start with a folded piece of hemp cord about 5″ long, and attach it to the Styrofoam ball as a hanger.

Next start wrapping the hemp cording tightly around your hanger, in a spiral pattern, making sure each strand is really close to the last so no white shows through.

Then just keep on going until the entire thing is covered. I just applied a thin bit of glue every now and then to make sure it was secure. When I didn’t do this I had a habit of dropping the ornament and all my work came undone. So don’t make that mistake ;)
