Handmade Gifts Series – Festive Elastic Hair Tie Gift

Gold Black White Hostess Gift

I love a great handmade gift that’s small, inexpensive, and a crowd pleaser. This year I’m whipping up some Fold Over Elastic (FOE) Hair Tie Gifts. These are great little ‘thinking of you’ gifts for friends and coworkers, and they are going to be a big hit in the stockings of my teenage stepdaughter. (I hope!)

Here’s what you’ll need to make your hair bands:

Fold Over Elastic

Scissors

Tape Measure

Open Flame (lighter or candle)

Seriously…that’s it.

It is soo easy.  Just take your long piece of elastic, cut in 9″ lengths.  Then tie a knot close to the end of each and sear the cut edge to prevent fraying by burning ever so quickly with an open flame.  Boom!  Done.

I put them in plastic cello bags and ties a gold bow at the top for a finishing touch.  I even picked up a few other cute items from the dollar bin at Michael’s which include this black and gold pen and black and gold polka dot journal.  This would make a great hostess or teacher gift under $10 total with a lot of glam and small impact on your wallet!

FOE isn’t hard to find.  There are so many great vendors out there.  I got the ribbon in my collection from Welch’s Workshop on Etsy.  I ordered 2 yards of each of the different ribbons.  The patterned elastics equate to $0.28 each and the solids come in at $.08 each. With the fun packaging that puts this gift at just about $1.50 each for 6 elastics in a pretty bag.

  1. I think about doing something like this every year and never do. Now I’ve got to do it seeing as how you’ve already figured out how to package it up and make it look great!
